Problem/Business Requirement

A leading cruise line aimed to modernize its data integration ecosystem by transitioning from a legacy SAP Data Services (DS) platform to a modern, cloud-native architecture. With SAP DS scheduled for decommissioning by June 2026, the existing ETL infrastructure posed increasing risks and inefficiencies. Data pipelines spanned multiple systems, and the platform's limitations were impeding growth and innovation. The organization faced:

  • Imminent obsolescence of SAP Data Services, creating urgency for platform replacement.
  • High risk of operational disruption due to dependency on outdated, unsupported ETL infrastructure.
  • Poor scalability and limited performance, unable to support growing data volumes or evolving business needs.
  • Inefficient workflows with high manual maintenance and lack of automation.
  • Elevated licensing and maintenance costs without corresponding business value.
  • Strategic misalignment with long-term data and technology modernization goals.
Strategic Approach

Logic Pursuits (LP) implemented a structured, phased migration strategy grounded in agile sprint planning and data engineering best practices. The approach focused on minimizing disruption while accelerating time-to-value through scalable modernization.

Comprehensive Discovery & Assessment

  • Inventoried approximately 260+ SAP DS jobs and mapped lineage, dependencies, and transformation logic
  • Collaborated with client teams to identify inefficiencies and redundant workflows

"As-Is" Migration Execution

  • Incrementally migrated domain-based jobs using Matillion to integrate and orchestrate SQL logic.
  • Modular SQL transformations were then re-implemented and parameterized using dbt, preserving job intent and sequencing.

Optimization & Modernization

  • Mapped job dependencies and grouped jobs based on complexity and modularity to streamline build and testing efforts, 5 migration groups were created across 260 jobs.
  • Improved efficiency and execution consistency by breaking down monolithic SAP DS scripts into smaller, manageable Matillion components with clearly defined transformation steps in dbt.
  • Retained functional logic from SAP DS while ensuring portability across modern SQL environments, allowing for quicker adoption by client’s in-house engineering team.

Cloud-Native Architecture Enablement

  • Aligned job structure and output formats with the client’s Snowflake-based data architecture to ensure seamless downstream integration.
  • Delivered clean, migration-ready dbt and Matillion pipelines, structured for handoff to client engineering for CI/CD and observability integration.
  • Supported client teams in embedding data quality checks and logging by ensuring the migrated jobs were compatible with their monitoring tools and governance workflows.
Reference Architecture
Outcome
  • 40% increase in data throughput, enabling faster and more reliable data delivery across systems.
  • 60% reduction in query response times, accelerating time-to-insight for business users.
  • Support for 100+ evolving business needs, with a scalable, modular architecture ready for future growth.
  • $500K in annual cost savings by eliminating SAP DS licensing and maintenance.
Result

Enabled efficient, reliable data processing. Accelerated query performance by 60%, eliminated $500K in annual costs, and laid the groundwork for scalable, future-ready operations.
